Girls on the Run – Greater Hartford

Girls on the Run Greater Hartford is a nonprofit organization that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. Our organization works with girls in 3rd – 8th grade in Hartford, New Haven, Tolland, Litchfield and Fairfield Counties in Connecticut.

Services We Provide

  • Girls on the Run elementary school program inspires girls of all abilities in 3rd-8th grade to recognize their individual strengths while building a sense of connection in a team setting. Volunteer coaches facilitate lessons that blend physical activity with life skill development to enable girls to adapt to whatever comes their way. At the end of the season, the team completes a 5K together, which provides a tangible sense of accomplishment and sets a confident mindset into motion.
  • Heart & Sole middle school program meets the unique needs of girls of all abilities in 6th-8th grade. The program considers the whole person – body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection. Heart & Sole offers an inclusive place of belonging, where girls feel supported and inspired to explore their emotions, cultivate empathy and strengthen their physical and emotional health. At the end of the season, all program participants complete a 5K.
  • Camp GOTR 3rd – 5th grade girls experience the enrichment and empowerment of our traditional girls’ program with all the fun of camp. Girls benefit from an inclusive, interactive and fun experience that nurtures personal growth. The confidence gained, creativity unleashed, and new connections made will last well beyond their week with us.

Recent Notable Girls on the Run Hartford Accomplishments:

Girls on the Run Greater Hartford has positively impacted the lives of over 4,000 girls across Connecticut. This year we will serve over 500 girls, 40% of whom will receive financial assistance to participate in our program. Each Girls on the Run team completes community impact projects where they give back to their community and make change happen. As we continue to read news stories of the isolation that girls are feeling at this time, our program provides an important intervention to support girls.

TANGO’s Impact

We love the resources, trainings and interactions with partner organizations that TANGO provides. We have only been a member for a few months and have already benefited greatly from attending the annual conference and the women leadership group. As an organization dedicated to improving the lives of girls, networking and learning from other women in the women leadership group has been invaluable in terms of sharing best practices and receiving and giving support. We’re a very small organization and are grateful that the resources are provided free to us. As we move from a subsidiary council to a fully independent council next year, we look forward to working directly with TANGO partners to meet our organizational needs.

We are always looking for volunteers to join our program as committee volunteers, volunteer coaches and board members. Please contact us if you’re interested in impacting the lives of girls across Connecticut.
