TANGO Member Showcase - January 2026
Middlesex Habitat for Humanity (MHFH) is a local affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. We are an independent, locally run, IRS 501(c) (3) organization, headquartered in Cromwell, CT and working throughout Middlesex County. We have built or rehabbed over 18 homes in Middlesex County and helped dozens of families and individuals since our organization was established in 1996.
We construct, rehabilitate, and preserve homes; by advocating for fair and just housing policies; and by providing training and access to resources to help families and individuals improve their shelter conditions.
Habitat provides homeowners with a hand up, not a hand out. Our homeowners pay an affordable mortgage, receive financial education, and help build their homes alongside volunteers. We acquire land and houses to rehab through property donations, tax liens and very low-cost sales from both individuals and towns. With the dedication of many volunteers, we are providing an American Dream – home ownership – to families and individuals in our Middlesex County communities.
MHFH serves Centerbrook, Chester, Cromwell, Deep River, Durham, Essex, East Haddam, East Hampton, Haddam, Higganum, Ivoryton, Middlefield, Middletown, Old Saybrook, Portland, and Westbrook
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowners. Habitat houses are sold at no profit, financed with affordable mortgages. The homeowner’s monthly mortgage payments are used to build more houses.
Middlesex Habitat for Humanity also operate a ReStore in Cromwell, CT. The ReStore is a nonprofit home improvement store and donation center that sells quality new and used furniture, appliances, home accessories, and building materials to the public at low cost. We are protecting the environment by keeping furniture and other items out of landfills and using the proceeds to build homes.

- Affordable Housing
Recent Accomplishment:
In June of 2025 Middlesex Habitat for Humanity (MHFH) dedicated our 19th house project, on Brown Street in Middletown, featuring modern design and energy-efficient standards. The Brown Street home uses modular construction, a significant advancement that shortens build time and improves quality and sustainability. We build with an energy-efficient perspective and at Brown Street used prefabricated construction methods to reduce long-term costs for homeowners and improve sustainability. Preparations are underway for two homes in Cromwell, including a dedicated Veteran home. We hope to break ground in the Spring of 2026.
As we enter 2026, we are looking ahead to our 30th anniversary, marking three decades of dedication to building safe, affordable homes and strengthening communities across Middlesex County. This milestone represents not only the number of years served, but the lasting impact of partnerships with families, volunteers, donors, municipalities, and community organizations.
As we reflect on nearly 30 years of community impact, providing families with stability, opportunity, and a path to homeownership, the anniversary also serves as a moment to look ahead. This milestone is a launch point for new initiatives, expanded collaborations, and innovative building approaches that will help address the dire need for affordable housing and ensure continued growth and impact for years to come.
