Nonprofits come to us with a clear goal: to strengthen their DEI efforts so that they can better meet the needs of the communities they serve. These mission-driven organizations often excel at embedding equity and inclusion into their public-facing work, ensuring their programs are accessible and responsible to diverse populations. Yet, while their DEI efforts are largely centered on serving communities, internal DEI efforts and an understanding of the DEI landscape within the nonprofit’s workplace frequently take a backseat to outward initiatives.

Nonprofits are uniquely positioned to address some of society’s greatest inequities. Yet, nonprofits face unique challenges: limited funding, high demand for services, and emotionally taxing work that requires a deep commitment from staff. These factors combined with under-resourced DEI support, can lead to high turnover and burnout, disproportionately affecting employees from marginalized backgrounds who are essential to driving the organization’s mission forward.

Despite these challenges, employees in nonprofits have a deeply rooted commitment to DEI values., Through our data collection methods, we have found that nonprofit employees consistently score higher in valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles than those in private and government sectors. The desire to drive positive change is high. However, translating those practices into sustainable internal practices has been less consistent.

Assessing the organization’s DEI landscape within its workplace culture and addressing those issues is vital for nonprofits to create environments where employees can thrive, especially those engaging with vulnerable populations. By prioritizing internal DEI work, nonprofits can build sustainable cultures that support employees, reduce burnout, retain valuable team members, and foster a resilient, mission-aligned workforce.

An internal DEI focus is essential for creating a sustainable workplace culture. Nonprofits prioritizing internal DEI needs can mitigate burnout, retain talent, and foster a resilient, supportive environment where employees feel valued and able to thrive. A strong internal DEI focus not only enhances the employee experience but also strengthens the organization’s ability to deliver on its mission effectively.

An organizational DEI assessment, such as Tangible Development’s DEI Climate Assessment Tool©®™ (DEI CAT©®™), can provide critical insights into your current workplace culture. With this data, nonprofits can better identify gaps and opportunities for improvement, ultimately building an environment where employees from all backgrounds feel safe, valued, and empowered to do their best work.

Takeaways for Nonprofit Leaders:

  • Make internal DEI work a priority, not an afterthought. Just as DEI values are crucial in serving the community, it’s equally vital within your organization’s workplace. A balanced approach ensures your nonprofit is well-equipped to achieve its mission sustainably.
  • Align DEI values with internal policies and practices. Internal DEI work should be more than ideal; it should be reflected in policies, practices, and culture. Ensure that your nonprofit “walks the talk” by creating an environment that truly lives and breathes DEI values.
  • Create a workplace culture that fosters retention and growth. Prioritizing DEI work in the workplace helps to retain employees from diverse backgrounds, especially those with marginalized identities. A strong, inclusive culture supports these employees and the organization values their well-being, helping them bring their best to the communities they serve.
  • Strengthen your mission by supporting your team. A nonprofit’s mission depends on the people behind it. Investing in an internal DEI assessment empowers your team and ensures that the organization’s internal culture reflects the inclusive values that guide its work.
