Saving Versus Making
In conversations with many of our 2,000+ nonprofit member organizations, a common theme over the years has been: How do we position our organization to generate more revenue?
Recently, I’ve noticed a meaningful shift in that dialogue. The focus is moving from making more money to saving money more strategically. While revenue growth is essential to sustaining any organization, disciplined expense management is equally powerful. Every dollar saved is a dollar redirected to mission.
Last week, I had the opportunity to speak with one of our newest TANGO Partners, James Leary, Esq., President of Leary Public Affairs, a well-respected firm based in Worcester, MA. Jim has spent his career in government and public affairs — serving as a State Representative, Senior Advisor to the Governor, and leading government and community relations for two of Central Massachusetts’ largest employers. He has also served on numerous nonprofit boards. During our discussion with a group of nonprofit CEOs, Jim made a comment that resonated deeply: “For nonprofits, it’s time to get ready. This is the year to batten down the hatches — next year, the fiscal hurricane will hit.”
If anyone has their finger on the pulse of nonprofit funding trends, it’s Jim. His perspective reinforces what we are hearing across the country: preparation now will determine stability later. With that in mind, I encourage every TANGO member to consider a second opinion on your organization’s operational efficiency. Are there expenses that can be reduced? Contracts renegotiated? Processes streamlined? TANGO and our highly vetted Partners have helped countless members uncover savings and implement operational improvements that free up meaningful resources for mission delivery. Our mission has always been simple: Helping nonprofits thrive — from a business perspective. If you have not recently reviewed our full suite of professional services, I encourage you to do so.
