Summer Safety: Stay Hydrated!
As the temperatures rise, so does the risk of heat-related illness—especially for employees working outdoors. Whether you’re supporting clients during community outings, working in a group home garden, or supervising recreational activities, staying hydrated is essential for your safety and performance.
Even mild dehydration can cause fatigue, dizziness, confusion, and muscle cramps. In extreme heat, it can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke – which is a serious medical emergency.
Hydration Tips for Hot Days:
- Start your day with water – Drink a glass of water before your shift begins.
- Sip often, don’t wait – Aim to drink 5–7 ounces every 15–20 minutes when working outside.
- Skip sugary or caffeinated drinks – They can dehydrate you. Stick with water or electrolyte drinks.
- Rehydrate after your shift – Help your body recover by continuing to drink water even after you’re off the clock.
Watch for These Warning Signs:
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Dark yellow urine
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid heartbeat
If you or a coworker experiences any of these symptoms, get to a cooler area, hydrate, and alert a supervisor immediately.
Report feelings of Illness or Symptoms Promptly
If you start feeling unwell while working in the heat—even if it’s just feeling “off”—report it to your supervisor right away. Don’t push through it. Early reporting helps us respond quickly and prevents more serious outcomes.
Remember: Your health and safety come first. Reporting symptoms is not just okay, it’s expected and appreciated.
TRUST Tips:
- Carry a refillable water bottle and keep it nearby.
- Take breaks in shade or air-conditioned areas.
- Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and a hat.
- Enjoy hydrating snacks like fruit throughout the day.
Let’s all look out for each other this summer. Staying cool and hydrated means staying safe!
Beyond insurance, the Trust provides in‑house services—claims administration, managed care, and proactive loss control education and facility audits—designed to reduce claim costs and promote early return to work. For additional information, please visit www.wctrust.com
